The Swedish Defence Research Agency, FOI, is one of Europe’s leading research institutes in the defence and security area with around 1,000 employees of whom around 900 researchers. It is an assignment-based agency under the Ministry of Defence. FOI’s core activities are research, development of methods and technologies, and studies for defence, security and safety. The Department of Energetic Materials has extensive experience of lasers, spectroscopic methods and optics, and has adequate laboratory and other experimental facilities, including labs for chemical synthesis and analysis as well as out- and indoor test facilities. The department has actively pursued mine and explosives detection for many years, and the development of possible detection and identification techniques is an area of great interest and under rapid development.
